Every Friday, when I am cooking lunch for my family, part of making the food reminds me of my mom (May Allah have her soul in Jannah, Aamin). I remember
Mom: Hamdi, bring me the Mindi.
Hamdi: Ok, mama
Mom: Rooda Hamdi, give me some Dhuxul.
Hamdi: Here mom.
Mom: Hamdiyeey, give me the Milix
The earliest memory of my childhood, for as long as I remember, is that our mom cooked meat on Fridays, the designated meal every Friday was meat and Bariis. I, being the oldest, was always by her side, assisting her, and OMG I was a very observant child. I used to question everything that old people around me did.
On Friday mornings, we would have a nice family breakfast and then come prepared for lunch. I used to watch her cut the vegetables, cut the meat, and put spices in the Digsi, so the soup can be delicious. and when she finishes, cutting veggies, she would eat a piece of the cabbage, and I would listen to that crunch and ask her, Hooyo, why do you eat the cabbage uncooked? can you eat it uncooked?
She would tell me, yes, you can eat cabbage uncooked, and it is actually healthier if you eat it that way, but I didn't like the taste of uncooked cabbage then, so I would just watch her eat every time. Now, I love eating cabbage uncooked, cooked, cabbage reminds me of my mom every Friday when I am making food for my own family. That was one of the best times of my life, I will always carry and cherish this memory.
What reminds you of your mom?
